No, that really depends on the field. For example, my father has a Ph.D. in Chemistry and spent his life working at a hospital, first doing research with federal grant money, and then running a lab there. My sister and her husband both have Ph.D.s in Psychology, and my sister works in a hospital supporting the nurses as they care for the patients, while my brother-in-law is a private practitioner. Mine is in Marketing, and while I work at a university, some of my former classmates are now working either as consultants or in market research firms.

PhDs are also for people who want to move on in psychology or law or sociology or just about anything else. It's merely the degree after an MA or MS or MBA. And, yes, you need it to teach at a graduate level.

Stay in school. You will learn what all those ratings mean. They don't necessarily mean your outcome in life. They just mean your level of education if you pass the tests. I have friends that have PHD's and have trouble taking out the trash.

No they are not. It may be required in some fields of study. PhDs are also for people that really want to become experts in their fields for whatever reason.
