i have some paste finishing wax, i have my ancient archtop hollow body, i've got #0000 Steel wool, all the stuff people have said, but how do i apply the wax so i get a nice smooth finish that won't rub off or anything like that? It needs to be good becuase it is very expensive wood, don't bother to say "Take it too a luthier!" cause if i could i would i assure you ^_^.

by the way the surface has already been stripped etc. etc. i just am not sure if wax is what i should be using, and yes i used a tack cloth, it is finished, but i can't get the smooth guitar finish that comes on a stock, that what i need. should i be using a rub on for a final coat??? p.s. i used polyurethane for the finish, because it is more flexible and a little lighter for what i needed and the wood density so don't go critisizing it lol.

With no offense meant Jake; it sounds like the guitar needs re-finishing; not just waxing.

Your Q suggests you're attempting that anyway. SMOOTH won't strictly be related to the wax; or even the method of application; but will in some measure; depend on your WOOLING the current finish, and tack clothing it off.

WAX; by the way; even in some depth of penetration; WILL RUB OFF; and be affected by body oils; action; subtle abuses in friction; etc.

If you get to a point where you've WOOLED it enough; you might try finsihes similar to its original. You might also attempt substances similar to those used on surf boards?
