Automatic Admission
If you are a freshman who graduated in the top 20 percent of your high school class, you will be automatically admitted to the university. All applicants, regardless of class rank, must submit SAT I or ACT scores.

Regular Admission
You will be admitted if you rank in the top 50 percent of your high school class and have a minimum of 1000 SAT I** or ACT 21.

** The new SAT has three components (writing, critical reading, and mathematics). The minimum SAT I of 1000 will include only the scores from the critical reading and mathematics.

Your going to use applytexas.org to apply... I do remember their being essays (but that was 4 or 5 years ago) however for UH I think they might have been optional! Just going start filling out the application and it will tell you.

YOu need to go see the college councilor at your school and they will be able to really help you.
UH is a fairly easy school to get into.

The College Board is good for this kind of thing. Go onto www.collegeboard.com, then look at the "college matchmaker" feature on the lefthand side of the home page. Here are a few exerpts for the University of Houston:

22% in top 10th of graduating class
53% in top quarter of graduating class
83% in top half of graduating class
24% had h.s. GPA of 3.75 and higher
20% had h.s. GPA between 3.5 and 3.74
20% had h.s. GPA between 3.25 and 3.49
14% had h.s. GPA between 3.0 and 3.24
16% had h.s. GPA between 2.5 and 2.99
5% had h.s. GPA between 2.0 and 2.49
1% had h.s. GPA between 1.0 and 1.99

Those admissions figures are for the University as a whole. Many universities, especially those with renowned programs in these areas, are much more competitive to get in to things like the Pharmacy and Engineering programs. Honestly, though, I bet you'd be surprised how many people fail out or switch out of engineering within a year. Study hard, taking lots of classes that mirror the engineering curriculum, and do well, and you can probably reapply and get in the Engineering program after your first year.

The best place to look is the University's own website, or call the admissions office.
