Well three friends and I when 2400 miles in 4 days (over the 4th of July weekend) and not one of us complained about any body aches and pains.

1: Yamaha 1600 Road Star
1: Yamaha 1100 V-Star
1: Honda Valkyrie
1:Kawasaki 1500 Vulcan (fuel injected).

Or if you want a tour bike nothing better then a Honda GoldWing.

I would say a lot depends on where you're going and what your riding style is.

Everyone will say the Goldwing is the best long distance bike, and that's true if you're crossing the country on the freeway. The Goldwing is a big heavy beast, not the most fun on twisty back roads, or navigating through the crowded streets of a big city.

I have a Honda ST1100, which is sort of the Goldwing's little brother. It is an excellent bike for long rides, quiet and smooth and stable going 90 mph all day. But if I was going to go on the freeway all day I'd take the car. I like back roads and curvy mountain passes, and it's far from optimum for that. I still have my previous bike which is an old BMW 'airhead', and it still excels at these jobs. And it's MUCH more at home on a dirt road or a gravel parking lot (or really -any- parking situation). It holds as much luggage, it's just as comfortable (with an aftermarket seat), and it goes just about as fast.

If you read articles about motorcycle touring, and travelogues, you see two different philosophies. One is the more serious traveler, whose biggest consideration is to cross as much territory as possible in as much luxury as possible, and he will be riding a Gold Wing or Road King or a Voyager or something like that, some huge purpose-built touring mount. The other is more interested in the adventure of back roads and out-of-the-way places and maximum miles per day is not his prime consideration. He will be riding something smaller, maybe a 750, with good wind protection, good luggage and a comfortable seat. There is even a whole genre of 'adventure touring' bikes that can go off road occasionally.

It's good to remember that at one time a 'touring bike' was any bike you could bungee a sleeping bag to!

Long trips? Maximum comfort and features? 2-up? No contest on this one: The Honda Goldwing - IMHO. Followed by the BMW LT, and the Harley Ultra Classic, in that order.

The Wing has dominated the top-of-the-line touring big rigs for literally decades. It is specificaly designed for that job, and does it very well.

Not ready for the cost of one of the new GL1800s? No problem, get GL1500SE (specifically the SE model). They can be had for $6000 to $8000. They were made from 1988 through 2000. But do not buy a 1988 first year issue.

Long legs? Buy a 1990 through 1994. Short legs? Buy 1995 through 2000 with the OEM Honda seat 1 1/4" lower.

The amount of Hondaline and aftermarket accessory stuff available for the Goldwing is unmatched by any other touring motorcycle on the market. This allows you fine-tune your Wing to suit your every need, want, and convenience, including your passenger.

Nuff said! ;-)

The bike that fits you properly and offers the accys. you want. For some people that means a H.D. Road King and for others it's a BMW. I know a guy who insists on a Kawasaki KLR cause of it's dual nature. For me I love my ZX-10 and some soft bags. 800-1000 mile days are no biggy and I can drag my knees in the twistys. I used to ride a Yamaha Venture XVZ1200 on long road trips and it was very nice with stereo and all but it was boring as hell. Any bike from {major manufacture} 250cc up will work, but what do you want ?? It's much like me asking you what color I should paint my house.....It's a personal decision that you need to make yourself. Good Luck !
