My husband and I have decided we are both ready to start a family. However, there are two reasons why I am a little scared that maybe I can't.

1 - I rarely played it safe. With boyfriends in high school/college we rarely used a condom and just did the pull out method. My husband and I have been married three years now and have only used the pull out method. I now look back on this and wonder how I managed to never get pregnant. Just lucky? But who is that lucky?

2 - When I first started having a period (age 12) they were 6 - 7 days long. Eventually that went down to 5 days long, and now for the past 3 years my periods are practically non-exsistant. They only last 2 days, with light spotting on the 3rd. Is my fertility disappearing as my period gets shorter and shorter???

Background info: Age 26, exercise regularly, does not smoke or drink. I do have a stressful job though (military).

Any words of wisdom is greatly appreciated.

You're being paranoid. :) Good luck! I think we all wonder about this before we finally get pregnant.

You may not be losing your fertility so to speak, but any part of your female reproductive parts could be changing. I have had a really hard time getting pregnant. With both kids it was almost two years each(We used computerized monitors and had fertility tests, etc...). So just because you use the pull out doesn't mean that even if some sperm were swimming around in there, you'd get pregnant.
Best bet would be to go see an OB/GYN just to have a general check up and an annual PAP. Then he can give you the info you need to take the next step.

The more active you are the less body fat you have and the less of a period you will have, eventually you will have none. Think "GI Jane".

We used the pull out method, and having regular sex for about 1.5 years before I got pregnant.

Dont jump to conclusions. In most cases someone in your shoes can gain 5-10 pounds, cut out some stress, and get pregnant right off.

But even for a healthy couple it can take a year or better.

Theres no reason why you should assume youre body will fail you.

I would start by tracking your ovulation with temperatures, cervical mucus and maybe some ovulation kits. You may not have any problems if you're ovulating regularly, and you may just be lucky with light periods. If you haven't gotten prego in 3-6 months, I would contact a fertility specialist. It may be a deficiency in one of the following hormones-FSH, LH, estrogen or progesterone. Progesterone is the one that gets the uterus ready by increasing the uterine lining, which when fertilization does not occur, progesterone drops and you have a period. A light period may suggest low levels of progesterone, but you won't know until you get started. Best of luck!

I would have a fertility screening to check out everything. YOur period days declining could have something to do with what birth control you use. I couldn't get pregnant until I was 28 because I had a thyroid condition that went undiagnosed despite my requests for TSH level checks. I went without a period for 6 months at a time and before that had light infrequent period. Good luck.
