Liberals said Reagan was dangerous and his rhetoric scary. They ridiculed him as an idiot for believing the Soviet Union could be toppled. They opposed him on every front -- strengthening the military, aiding and arming anti-Communist rebels around the world, invading Grenada, preparing to win a nuclear war, building a nuclear shield, and waging a spiritual crusade against Soviet totalitarianism. Reagan said the Soviet Union was an evil empire and we would prevail. He called the ball, the shot, and the pocket, and he won the game. But now we're supposed to believe he was lucky. Liberals lie about Reagan's victory because when Reagan won the Cold War, he proved them wrong on everything they had done and said throughout the Cold War!

Look, I love the U.S.A. and I'm a proud citizen of this country. I am, above all else, a loyal AMERICAN.

Here is the problem with your question. How does one become voted the greatest American of all time? I mean, what is the criteria by which this is decided?

I don't know every American that lives in this country. The one thing I do know is that there are many Americans that do great things that we never hear about.

You don't have to be in the political forum to be considered a great American. Or even the greatest American.

What is un-American is to decide that because other people don't agree with you, that they are less of an American than you.

I don't know you personally, however; I bet you do some very good things for other people.

Now, with all that said, I don't affiliate myself with any particular political party. I listen to what every candidate has to say and make judgments based on research and if they are telling the truth.

He who speaks the truth is amongst the greatest of all.

Question--who did the "voting?" I've nothing against Reagan--in fact I voted for him the second time around. But "the greatest American of all time?" That is simplyridiculous. Here's some other possibilities (in no particular order:

Thomas Jefferson
Benjamin Franklin
Abraham Lincoln
Franklin Roosevelt
Martin Luther King, Jr.

I'm limiting it to politics--or the list would have to be a lot longer (Edicon, Bell, the Wrights, Shockely, etc. in science and technology, for example).

Sorry--Reagan isn't even in the running.

So--again iI ask--who were the voters? Is it a representative sample of people? Was it based on ALL of America's history or on justthe last few decades?

Or--(which is actuallly the casee, I'm not guessing)--was it simply a skewed poll doen e by some of the right wing to try to shore up their discredited ideology and political agenda? Which--BTW--is why liberas--and the majority ofthe American people--don't agree.

I am a liberal, but I do not think Reagan was a bad president. However, he is certainly not the best president of all time. He was TERRIBLE when it came to domestic affairs. At the time, or when the time he left office, we had 3 trillion in debt (the most for it's time). Many of the ghetto's become worse, and also, lets not forget he aided Osoma bin La din (At this time we considered him an ally). Reagan did good things as well. He was extremely strong on defence-the strongest military we may have ever had. So, as you see, I am trying to be objective here. Good president-Yes. Best- certainly not. I would put him in the top 15.

Reagan was a likeable guy, but he spent our nation into a tremendous debt. Reagan had the sense to disengage the marines from Beirut after the barracks were bombed...he did not try to escalate war in this region.

Although Reagan did cut taxes, he raised taxes far more than he cut them, however, hardly anyone mentions this.

He is probably considered far more conservative than today's brand of neo-cons, who have lost their way.

Greatest American of all time?

Hardly. the honors should go to someone like Jonas Salk, who created the polio vacine.

No ploitician should ever be credited with best American.

Stupid idea. Stupid poll.

I respect Ronald Reagan and think, as a moderate, that overall he was a good President, he is definetley ranked in the upper half of US President (I think 15 out of 42) but I think he certainly got a boost in that poll because of his recent death at the time of the polling.

LMFAO.....that's absurd....who voted partisan hacks, that so ridiculous that it almost defies explanation, only uninformed maladroit think he defeated the USSR rather than the millions of Soviet citizens who took to the streets, and stopped activities until reforms were initiated. Giving Ronnie credit for Glasnost/ Perestroika, My god how you can spin nonsense it some vague truth, at least he did not interfere. AS if a huge US deficit and a speech about a wall, could topple a superpower. Think people...I was there, Solidarity/ Poland / Powkrepa/ Bulgaria....the Velvet revolution, Czechoslovakia
Millions of people on the march for freedom, and you think a man with dyed black hair 10,000 miles away did it. because you heard it from a paid press pundit. Creating your own reality.

The simple fact that Reagan was voted "Greatest American" shows clearly the declining standards of American education.

Reagan (Administration Motto: "Napping to Greatness") was an unmitigated disaster and only slightly better than the unspeakable Nixon and the unbelievably horrific Bush The Lesser.

Reagan is not above Lincoln. Reagan gets too much credit for ending the Cold War. He didn't do it alone. And I don't agree with his economic policy

Those hundreds of thousands who were homeless during the Reagan years, the poor children who had ketchup as their veggie for lunch, those whose quality of life went in the dumpster during his terms will never, ever see him as a great American. And there are many.
