It's either they forget about paying you back or they just don't wanna separate with their money...I know that's silly! I am guilty of that. But I make it a point to pay back.
Best solution: Ask them directly! If they are not going to pay back or said that they didn't borrow from you. Then remember that you aren't going to lend them any cent!
Alternative; Don't lend them even though you have

It depends on if it's just a few quid or a big amount. If it's only a little I'd write it off. If it's a lot of money just ask them for it back as you need it. It's your money so you shouldn't feel bad for asking for it, if they make you feel bad they aren't much of a friend.
Learn a lesson from it and never lend them any money again.

if this is a constant problem,
simply DO NOT EVER lend them money again. i know it is easy to just give thme a buck or 2 every now and then, but just keep remembering that they OWE you even more than that
next time they ask you for money, tell them that you are running low, and then ask them if THEY can pay you back the money they owe you.
you're not a bank, don't let them make you feel guilty when you say no to them.

Put yourself in a position where you have no money, and be all "Heyy, you wanna pay me back now?"
I usually don't ask for them to repay me though.

take it as a valuable lesson, loaning money isn't good to keep friendships. never loan or borrow again. I say never borrow, because if you borrow, they will expect to be able to borrow from you.

do NOT get into the habit of loaning people money now... it will only blow up in your face.
if someone needs money, they can get a job, or if they are young, can ask their parents.
loaning money is a bad habit, and people tend to use others who they know will "loan" money....
saying "NO" isn't a crime...

depends on how much, if its less than a dollar forget it, but if its more, send them an email or a text from your mobile (if your shy to tell em face to face) and tell em, 'Hey can u give me my $* when we go out next cause i kinda need it, tnx xxx'
and thats done
