....about Sundin's record breaking goal(s). Basically, he said that Nolan chose to put Dubielewicz in net knowing that Sundin was going to get his goals and he didn't want it to go down in history that Sundin got his goals against DiPietro. Could there be any truth to that? Or do you think Don Cherry was making it up? How would he know this?

My thoughts on Cherry's comments are:
1) Nolan "gave" the game to the Leafs and "gave" Sundin his goals by putting Dubie in net;
2) Nolan was protecting DiPietro from going down in the record books from giving up record breaking goal/s to Sundin;

Just answer the question....this question is not about the Leafs winning the Cup or Sundin breaking NHL records...read it again!

LITY's stats aside, I'm not buying it on this one.
Dipietro had played 4 of 6 nights, the Isles had the Leafs the night after a physical tilt with the Rangers, their next opponent after Toronto was Philly 2 nights later, the Leafs were 1-3 going into the game and Dubie hadn't played yet.
If any one of the above factors are not enough to justify the coach's decision, the collective should be more than ample justification.
Then again, I think Cherry ran out of anything useful to say many moons ago, so I'm a little biased.

I think there is probably some truth to it...It speaks more to wha the Islanders think of the Leafs... let's put our back up in and and give Dipietro a rest becaise we have as good a chance with Dubie in net...

Cherry just wanted to stir some crap up again. The reason why Dubielewicz started was because they played the Rangers the night before with Lundqvist in net. Any hockey fan knows not to start the number one back to back like that, except under special circumstances.

Happens all the time.
Toronto put their back-up in net in 1961 when Geoffrion scored his 50th goal.
More 50th goals have been scored against back-ups than starters. ken Dryden never gave up a 50th goal. Michel Larocque did. Richard Martin scored both his 50th goals against a back-up. Of Mike Bossy's ten 50th goals, 4 were scored against back-ups and his 500th came on an empty net. Mario Lemieux scored his 500th against Tommy Soderstrom. Just last year, Peter Bondra scored his 500th goals against a goalie who made 10 starts all year.
Nobody wants to be the answer to a trivia question.

Quite frankly, I think it's crap. Those records mean nothing to anyone but the Leafs and Leaf fans. Not like it broke say, a Rocket Richard or a Wayne Gretzky record is it? It's a Leaf stat only. Personally, I don't think Sundin was the best choice for Captain in the first place. I don't know what he's like IN the dressing room..but on the ice he hasn't consistently shown the intensity/desire of say a Clark, Gilmour or dare I say a Thomas or even Roberts. To me..it's just a stat which points to his longevity with the Leafs. Congrats to him for it..but it ain't gonna lead the team to the cup anytime soon. Going to take more than a record..

I think that is just made up, I would hope so, that would be a disgrace if true, DiPietro is too scared??? Com on... This is like the Barry Bonds, real athletes will pitch to him because they are competitive.

well, maybe it wasn't nolan who wanted to protect dipietro. maybe dipietro didn't want to play himself. but i don't thik any of this is true. nolan probably just wanted to give dubie a start and it turned out to be a diaster. dubie's probably not going to start for a while.

Cherry likes controversy.
His "I calls it like I sees it" attitude is one of the great things about HNIC.
