Well, the theme is pretty much what you wrote - how greed, the lust for material things, can divide even close family members who love one another.
(and that's not a rare occurrence; it happened with my Mom's family.)

There could be a couple of themes. One, just plain greed,
but fueled by sibling rivalry for the ultimate, last affections
of the father via a momento like the watch, and two, which
of the brothers is destined to take over the father's role in
the family...the one with the watch as a talisman?

Could the theme be how avarice leads to separation and division between two individuals? You could also bring in the issue of how entitlement leads to hard feelings between people. It is clear that each of them feels entitled to the watch. A good thing to explore was what makes each brother think he should have the watch. I like your premise.
