Can someone explain me the end? Why did he have to die?

Well, there's the foreshadowing and the tone:

"foreshadowing · Winston’s dreams (making love to Julia in the forest, meeting O’Brien in the “place where there is no darkness”); the St. Clement’s Church song (“Here comes a chopper to chop off your head!”)

tone · Dark, frustrated, pessimistic"

Hard to have a happy ending when those are present.

And then there's Winston's character itself - which has a very strong streak of fatalism.

The ending was the only one that could have been consistent with the rest of the book, especially the themes see link below, please.
