I think he meant what did people assume was the highest mountain before Everest.
K2 is the second highest mountain in the world after Mount Everest. It stands at 8,611 metres & is located in the Karakoram segment of the Himalayan range, in Pakistan and China, on the border between the Gilgit-Baltistan region in the Pakistan administered Northern Areas, and the Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County of Xinjiang, China.

Still Mount Everest the fact it hadn't been discovered didn't shrink it, if you had asked what the highest known mountain was then I would say I don't know.
