Leaving the light on all the time will mess with their day/night cycle, so it's best to turn it off at night. Also, leaving the light on all the time will cause you to have major algae problems, don't leave the light on any more than about 8 hours at a time to keep the algae from overtaking your tank.

Yes it is okay. This will not cause any significant changes to the aquarium's water chemistry. Nor will it affect the health or growth rate of the fish. BUT there is one condition that can occur from 24/7 lighting. Constant light over a long period (12 months or more) can lead to a complete depletion of one specific vitamin (sorry, can't remember which one) which causes the fish to go blind. No joke. I lost a prized fish (Harlequin Tusk) to this condition because I didn't know about it. This happens very, very rarely and may only effect one fish in a tank of thirty. Turning the lights off at night say once a week will make sure it never occurs. Cheers Jimmy

It's true. The whole idea behind putting rocks, plants, conditioners, etc. in an aquarium is to try and make it as much like the fish's natural environment as possible. In nature the fish get light during the day and dark at night. If they have light all the time they don't know when they should rest and they can't rest properly and get stressed, which lowers their immunity to diseases. Plus, too much light will cause algae to grow like crazy in your tank. It's best to keep fish on a regular, or at least semi-regular day/night light schedule. Just turn on the light when you get up and shut it off when you go to bed.

If you really want to have a light on in your aquarium late at night for some reason, there are special lights you can get to simulate moonlight that won't stress out your fish. Or if you can't remember to turn the lights on and off regularly, you can get a timer to put the aquarium light on that will automatically do it for you.

Fish doesnt have eyelids. Leave the light on for 7-8 hours a day if you like the light on. Although fish dont sleep, they rest. Lights out when nite time comes.

What you have heard is basically true. Fish (most of them) have no eyelids. It is hard to sleep with the lights in your eyes all the time. Also messes up their internal clocks.

If you forget once in a while they will make it until the next night, but all the time is bad.

Go to wal mart and invest 3 bucks in a timer. It will make you and your fish happier.

It might not be such a big deal, but if they are expensive fish, I'd do it. Turning it off to simulate night, like when you go to bed.
