Akira Kurosawa's The Bad Sleep Well (1960). You can analyze it on several levels. Overall, it's a tale of corporate and governmental corruption in post-WW2 Japan. But it's also a critique of the absurd feudal loyalties that keep Japan from spiritually progressing, even though the country itself had embraced Westernization. Another film is Kurosawa's Ikiru (1952), a slower, less exciting film that critiques the way Japanese bureaucracy functions. Ikiru was much beloved by Japanese audiences when it first premiered.

The 2001 Shunji Iwai film "All About Lily Chou-Chou" explores high school bullying. 1993's "All Under the Moon" concerns itself with discrimination against Korean residents of Japan. Every Itami Juzo film has something to say about Japanese society. "A Taxing Woman" takes on tax evasion/greed and "Tales of a Golden Geisha" is about political corruption.
