This is a general gang thing that has evolved in the last generation or so. During previous generations (prior to 1980) this was considered cowardice, but one on one fights to settle an issue gave way to gang attacks due to the need to quickly assault someone & get away with it. "Stop snitching" is an outgrowth of the gang mentality that allows this to continue. Mychal Bell was previously convicted of punching a 17 yr old girl in the face, something even gangs did not tollerate some 30 yrs ago.
Since the Jena incident I've heard of yet another incident of school bullying in the South... where 6 black students beat a white student. That was briefly mentioned on CNN but I didn't catch the name of the city & a search produced no link. That was a city in Georgia, or South Carolina.
These incidents of school bullying are growing more numerous & too little is being done to counteract them.

the themes in Jena are so a lot greater complicated than purely a single schoolyard incident. For the same reasons anybody else does, surprise to ensure winning and running to ensure not getting caught. If you attacked someone, would you walk up from the front and then wait around for the cops? Some people would, but they probably have an IQ somewhere around 9.
