how did they pull it off?

It is just a spill over from history and UK no longer deserves to have a separate currency while all other EU members have already given up their old currencies in favour of Euro. Also, the pound's edge over others is not supported by sound economic fundamentals as one can perceive looking at the UK economy!

Their currency is no stronger than the rest of Europe, the USD is weak so most currencies look strong in comparison

The Bank of England has not printed as much money as the Bank of Japan had recently, nor as much as the European Central Bank. The Japanese have cut back as of late as well as New Zealand.
