In 1986, Mkele Mbembe was on holiday in Kenya after graduating from Northwestern University.
On a hike through the bush, he came across a young bull elephant standing with one leg raised in the air. The elephant seemed distressed, so Mbembe approached it very carefully.
He got down on one knee and inspected the elephant's foot and found a large piece of wood deeply embedded in it.
As carefully and as gently as he could, Mbembe worked the wood out with his hunting knife, after which the elephant gingerly put down its foot.
The elephant turned to face the man, and with a rather curious look on its face, stared at him for several tense moments.
Mbembe stood frozen, thinking of nothing else but being trampled. Eventually the elephant trumpeted loudly, turned, and walked away.
Mbembe never forgot that elephant or the events of that day.
Twenty years later, Mbembe was walking through the Chicago Zoo with his teenaged son.
As they approached the elephant enclosure, one of the creatures turned and walked over to near where Mbembe and his son Tapu were standing.
The large bull elephant stared at Mbembe, lifted its front foot off the ground, then put it down. The elephant did that several times then trumpeted loudly, all the while staring at the man.
Remembering the encounter in 1986, Mbembe couldn't help wondering if this was the same elephant.
Mbembe summoned up his courage, climbed over the railing and made his way into the enclosure. He walked right up to the elephant and stared back in wonder. The elephant trumpeted again, wrapped its trunk around one of Mbembe' s legs and slammed him against the railing, killing him instantly .
Probably wasn't the same elephant.

Have you ever heard of an elephants wallet or umbrella being handed in to London Transport's Lost Property Office?
Come to think of it, when did you last hear of an elephant being late for an appointment either?

They do forget.
I've see one getting removed for a swimming pool as he kept forgetting to keep his trunks up.

well they just don't.
once there was this elephant in wilderness of Botswana, it had trouble finding a water source.1 day it stumbled across a military training camp and drank out of the make shift toilets, but the water was not enough,so out of curiousity or bravery 1 young solider came out of his hiding spot and offered it water in a large bowel. it drank and went away.....but came back during the week and kept doing so for months that followed.
everyone was now acustomed to having the elephant arround and they helped to water it until 1 day, on the last week of his training that same young solider who offered it water did something stupid. instead of giving it water he poured boiling hot oil which they have just used for preparing fat cakes...........
after just 1 sip it trumpeted, runing in circles and hiting its trunk against trees.........it went away, he also went back to the city after completing his first round of wilderness training.....the new batch of young soliders came in for their training and in due course the same elephant started coming arround.....they offered it water and went on with their business until 1 horrific day...........
the young solider from the previous training came back for his 2nd circle of training.......it took 1 look, just 1 encounter and the battle was on, it singled him out of the bunch, wherever he ran it charged......few moments later the onlookers hard to shoot it down for his life was in jeopardy....
