Hey,
I recently bought a 2001 Suzuki Katana 600. It has 2900 miles on it and runs like a dream. Except for one thing, when I shift the bike from nutral to first it makes this grinding nosie. I have the cluch fully depresed at this time. Also this grinding does not happen with any other gear changes, such as 1st to 2nd... This leads me to beleve one of my worst fears, it is a problem in the transmission. Do you guyes agree? and if so where can I get this part cheap? Do I have to buy a brand new transmissison or can I get a 1st gear repair kit? I was thinking of turing to ebay to save a couple of bucks, whould you recomend that?

Tom B gave very good advice.
It's most likely as simple as that.

by the way,,, Do you realize that Transmission repair requires Remove engine from frame,,,and taking entire engine apart?

And that your bike doesnt have separate "transmission oil" that can be changed/flushed,etc?

It shares the engine oil in a common sump.
So,,a Engine Oil Change = a "transmission oil change"

.................................
Put it on the center stand
Put it In Gear,,,
Pull Clutch In and hold it,,,,
While turning back wheel with your hand.

It should be very "free" to turn wheel,,,,,there's only light resistance from the gears.

If there's a heavy,dragging feel,,,,,
Check Clutch adjustment again.

If it wont adjust to break free&clear,,,
Look thru Oil Filler Plug on R/H engine cover,,,aka "Clutch Cover".

You can SEE/WATCH Clutch turning thru that hole as you turn back wheel.
Actually,,only the INNER hub and steel plates turn.
IF the Clutch Hub part that You'll see thru the hole remains fairly Still & Motionless,,,thats Good.

If there is any Distinct or extreme amount of "WOBBLE" in the clutch as ya turn the wheel,,,,
That indicates Warped Plates.
Which means Clutch Will Drag badly,,,
and that'll make it grind when going from N to 1st.

It's a small nuisance, but best to observe it Both when Cold And when Hot.
A Little bit of warpage gets worse when Clutch is Hot.

It's Probably just needing a proper clutch adjustment.

I've seen a BUNCH with moderate/minimal warpage of the clutch plates.
Some folks never notice it,,,others do.
Depends on How/Where bike is ridden.

In traffic,,,with a lot of stop & go & holding clutch In ,,it's worse.

Not saying that yours IS warped,,,it may be or maybe not.

It's just something to CHECK quick & easy if you cannot get Clutch Adjustment to break Free & Clean with No Drag.

If all that seems fine,,,check the shifter's detent roller.
They're a common cause of "half-way" into gear & causes the dogs to howl---which sounds like "grinding gears"

Your gearbox is Constant Mesh.
All Gears always meshed,,they can't actually Tooth-grind or Synchro-Crash like car boxes do.
Doesnt even have synchro rings in there

The noise is the engagement dogs clattering across their receiver mate when it wont slide fully into position.

Clutch Drag partially loads everything that slides in the trans,,,and can cause clatter.
Weak /Faulty shift detent will balk and not fully complete shift,
and can cause clatter.

Both are Easy to Check ,Cheap & easy to fix.

Do like Jim Sez--GET A Shop Manual.
Study how the Clutch and Shifter Mechanism work,,and the Transmission

The SIMPLE things are intermittent and variable.
The symptoms vary in how they act,,and to what degree.

A Broke Gearbox,,
AINT "broke sometimes,,and other times not".
It's symptoms are near purely consistent.

Good luck with it

There are over 30 parts in a motorcycle's transmission.
Up to 10 different parts in unison can be causing the problem.
Don't just go out and buy a gear, thinking that's going to cure the problem.
The engine has to be disassembled and diagnosed to determine the problem.
Parts for that bike are readily available.
Look at all the parts involved under - Transmission - Gear Shifting

Purchase a shop manual if you're going to attempt repairing it yourself. But be warned, it's no job for a beginner.

Gees..... Cheers and characteristic a superb week forward :)

Yes, theoretically you should be able to replace just the first gear, if you feel competent, capable, and are equipped with a workshop to do it.

Not familiar with the Kat 600... does it have a wet or dry clutch? I know my wet-clutched Yamaha and my dry-clutched Ducati both make clunking noises when going into first. It's normal. Don't worry about it.

Check or replace the fluid with the recommended stuff first. Could be a maintenance issue or water contamination.

Flush the trans - or have it done.

Put new fluid in there - repeat if necessary.
