They were fantastic. Hot running water, electricity, air conditioning, the works.

If you believe that, you'll believe anything.

Why not just search on Google?

Awful

They used small children to pull the coal up and down the mine. They were called hurriers. They had other small children opening doors for ventilation called trappers. They would work from 5am till 5 or 7 at night.

The miners themselves also worked long hours and were often crushed or gased.

i do not have any links available...but the conditions were extremely hazardous at best. cave ins and mine collapses occurred frequently. dangerous gases leaked into the mines also. the only way to detect the gas was by using live canary's. they would hang them at various places in the mine and if the canary died the miners knew there was a gas leak and had to get out immediately.

if you watch the movie "october sky" then in some scenes it'll show what the conditions were like in a coal mine. and the movie is based on a story that took place about 50 years ago...so, if thats what you mean by early...

They were not easy working conditions and many children also worked underground.

they were dangerous, with unscrupulous mining bosses who didn't care one whit for their workers. It was hot, underground work, with long hours, upwards to 12 hours a day, for low pay and most of the mining bosses had stores they owned and the prices were HIGH,and the pay, low.
