Assuming that your reading the directions on the gas valve correctly. You have the gas valve turned to the pilot position, you light a match and push the gas valve down and hold it down for a minute after the pilot lights, then you move the gas valve to the open position, and let it go.......and the pilot goes out??? if that's the problem you need a new Thermocouple. The thermocouple is the brass/copper piece you see by the pilot light, you can find that at a good hardware store or plumbing supply.

Kinda short on any helpful details...
Does it go out when you ease off on the spring-loaded "Pilot" setting? If so, perhaps a problem in the thermocouple circuit. If it never supports any attempted flame, perhaps you've a fuel supply problem-check for any in-line valves being shut off.
Perhaps you're not depressing the button long enough in the "Pilot" setting. It'll go out if the thermocouple doesn't reach sufficient temperature during the initial lighting.
Many tanks require a full tankload of water-if it's empty, it won't light.
A couple good raps on the supply line to the pilot will likely dislodge any contaminants that may've plugged it up some. You should hear the small hiss of fuel escaping when pilot button is depressed-or else there's a problem in your gasline.
Good Luck!

I use a propane torch to heat up the pilot in a heater that has been sitting up otherwise you will be there all day with matches. If you can light it but the pilot will not stay then you need a thermocouple as shown below:

That is a gas pilot probably.....maybe it isn't turned on...but if you can't get it to light....call the gas company to come out and check it for you. If it is electric call the Electric company.

First off turn off the gas, or expect an explosion, then carefully take off the pilot light itself, and clean it. it could be dirty, so dirty, it can't receive the gas it needs to stay lit. Otherwise, have a trained mechanic do it for you.
