A discharged battery is one which needs to be charged. A flat battery is the style of a battery utilized in cell phones, computer pcs, and different units to provide a low profile structure. A battery that become run over would properly be considered flat because that describes that is structure. A flat tire is one which needs a large quantity of further air to succeed in proper inflation pressure. using the word "flat battery" for a discharged battery is only a misnomer.

If the battery is 4 or 5 years old, you need a new one for the winter.

How long has the battery been in the car and how old is the car - if it's a 15 year old car and it still has the original battery - you've been lucky.
If you have an integrated alarm activated by key fob - you may have to retune the fob to the alarm/immobiliser that is fitted - if it has lost it's tuning, the car won't even try to start

Check the connections to the starter and alternator and battery for corrosion, just a little resistance in a high amperage circuit can ruin starter function. If clean have the battery and charging system tested.

What amps did you charge it at, an how long a charge?
Did you check each cell with a hydrometer? THATS the best way to determin the state of charge. It also shows if you have a dead cell.

If your battery is pretty old, then you may have killed it, take it to an auto parts store, they have a machine they can load test it with, that will tell you if it is good.
