Partly, it`s body language. Young people aren't sensitive to what other people feel like and make many social mistakes (as do some adults). The trick is to minimise them. Get a book out on basic body language (but don`t go daft with researching it too much, there`s no need and you don`t need psychology books either) e.g. a book by Allan and Barbera Pease first of all.
Try to guess how others think of you and how they react to you, then hopefully you will correct yourself but bear in mind that if you are going to change yourself, make sure it`s the right change e.g. less aggressive, less argumentative etc. but not drink more alcohol because others are or something silly like that.
It`s a hard one to answer because the personality is a complicated thing.
Just don`t think too deeply and it`s natural to make mistakes in life, I`ve made hundreds. We all do.
Good luck

Well, 'popular' popular as in in the popular group? 'Cause that's not as fun as you'd think. Or popular generally, with your friends.
As for the parties, I donno, I just get a comment on bebo or a call from my mates, I've recently met heaps of good people that go to heaps, I went out last night actually, with heaps of people it was good fun, but yeah. I donno, try socially a bit more and make random conversation.
Oh, and also, the people you'd probably not picture yourself being assosiated with can be the nicest people. Like I'm mates with blokes that brall and crap, but they're so nice, they only do it when they've got a reason.

being popular is not worth it, now making new friends- be nice and caring. Say hi to the kid sitting next to you in class

capitalized on who you are, then exaggerate them; like a certain way of walking. your hair. fashion sense.

there's nothing boring than looking like your same self ten years back.

Be yourself. If people don't want to accept you as you are, then I wouldn't be friends with them anyway.
