A duvet is also called a comforter. It is filled with either feathers, down, a combination of the two, or a high-loft filling. They are usually fairly puffy. The pillowcase that many people have referred to is NOT a duvet - it is a duvet COVER (also called a comforter cover). It is used both to protect the duvet itself (which is often quite difficult to wash) and to change the appearance of it, because the duvet is usually a solid color, often white. A quilt is two layers of fabric with a layer of some sort of batting between them. The layers are stitched together in a pattern, sometimes a grid, sometimes an allover pattern, sometimes with motifs like flowers, etc. It may also be tied instead of stitched. It is fairly thin and flat. It may be a solid fabric on both sides (called a wholecloth quilt), it may be solid on one side and made of smaller pieces of fabric sewn together (patchwork or applique) on the other side, or it may be pieced on both sides. A quilt does NOT use a cover - it is decorative on it's own. "Duvet" is a French term, and in the United States it is often referred to as a comforter. "Quilt" is from a Middle-English word that derived from an earlier French word. Quilted clothing was made thousands of years ago, although it was much more recently that it was used in making bedcovers. Quiltmaking has a long tradition in the United States, as well as many other countries throughout the world.

Say duvet now, A liner with a detachable, washable cover.. In my days quilts were with beds that had sheets and blankets and the quilt was an extra warmth layer.. It was not detachable and was made in one piece.. Can't ever remember mum washing quilts. . Same as bedspreads , who uses these much now?
