US 66 ("Route 66") used to be the major highway from Chicago to LA, and was famous as the route west. As the other poster notes, there was also a famous song about it. It was replaced by interstates. I-40 covers much of the old route. Officially US 66 no longer exists as a federal highway, but there are signs marking where old stretches of the highway still exist.
You can also still drive, I kid you not, Route 666, in Utah of all places...

Route 66.
In the days before our interstate system, it was the best way to get from Chicago to Los Angeles. As such, alot of interesting stores, clubs, restaurants, and local attractions sprung up along it.
It is still there in parts, but much of it has been replaced by interstate highways. The parts that remain are interesting for the history, and a good way to see some of America off the interstate.

Called the " Mother Road" it was 2450 miles long, connecting Chicago to LA.
Stretches still remain.
