I think its a bit ageist, how can the exhibition organisers justify this, I've got a degree in Fine Art and I'm an artist on the side and I only have one year or less till i'm 35 and I recently saw an advert for an exhibition, who's deadline had just gone for under 35's. I would have entered it next year because it was perfect for me, but I cant I'll be too old by the next one. How do they justify this ageism?

...A competition? ...They probably just want to keep the playing field level. You really can't expect a youngster's work to be as accomplished as someone that's put in twenty-thirty years.

...An exhibition... makes no sense.

:} I'd agree with April though. You should be reading a better class of magazine.

I have never seen this! Ever! I have seen the term emerging artist (versus mid-career) but that has no relationship with age--more of how established you are. So, I would speculate that it is perhaps where you are looking. Look for listings in the back or reputable art magazines (ie. Art News, Art in America, Art Forum, etc.) I hope this helps.

This sounds so peculiar that I wonder if you misinterpreted something about what they said. Does the phrase "deadline had just gone for under 35's" suggest that there were other deadlines for other ages? Just doesn't seem to make sense to me.

Have you ever seen this for any other show?

Hi,

In fact 35 is kind of strange. If it was 18 or lets say a competition for people with an age framed between two ages, like for insteance from 50 to 100.
That would be more logical.
But here's a link for you :

You can't justify it, if it was a job advert they could be prosecuted. Why not complain? I think that we all suffering from the worshipping of the "youth" thing, teenagers included. It's just pigeon-holing people.

They are probably trying to get the younger groups on a head start to boost their careers. maybe you can Google art competitions that will fit your talent level more closely.
