6m x 6m = 36 so it is 36 square meters.

Note in algebra mxm = m sq. If you have wondered about learning the algebra then now you are applying it.

6sq meters will be any combination that give 6 as an answer.

So, 6m x 1m = 6sq meters.
Also, 3m x 2m = 6sq. meters.
Even 1/2 x 12,-------, -------, Actually methematicaly and theorecticaly there are infinite combinations. But in practicality there are very few (this is yet another lesson in rounding off).

Meters figured in meters is exactly the same.
In other words if it says 6 sq meters
Then is is 6X6 square meters
The 3X2 (if that is sq meters) is 3X2 sq meters. HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE 6X6 SQ
You wouldn't want to change it unless you were breaking it down into say; millimeters or : See example of conversion chart

One square meter is equal to:
Metric
square kilometer 1 *10-06
hectare 0.0001
decare 0.001
are 0.01
square centimeter 10000
square millimeter 1000000
