I've read that you can fix by removing dash head unit, open up and spray with contact cleaner, any body know if this works please?

This very common on the BMW. Replacing the cluster is the only fix for dead pixels. The mileage is not stored in the cluster. It is stored in the Body Control Module. If you remove your cluster and make an attempt to repair it, you might make the problem worse, as it does contain some memory and has to be programmed for your specfic car. I have never seen a DIY fix on a programmed cluster, but I have seen plenty of problems made worse, with the attempts.

this is possible, however this is a tedious job opening up the cluster in order to get to the display and it's contacts
the best bet for a reliable repair is to order a new or rebuilt cluster from bmw.
this is an all too often occurrence. and can ruin the resale value of your car if the mileage display is affected.
bmw requires your old cluster for mileage verification down load and then upload of the new unit.
