No, they aren't. A compliment well-placed can be wonderful, perking up spirits and definitely brightening someone's day.
Even Mark Twain said, "I can live two months on a good compliment."
Think how low a reprimand or criticism makes you feel. Compare that to the glow that a compliment gives you. Besides, some people hardly ever receive a kind word or encouragement. So, your compliment can mean more than you could imagine.

no .. a nice compliment can make someone's day ... ofcourse pretty girls who are used to compliments start to feel bored with all the attention after a while ... and thus we guys have to come up with new compliments all the time ... see how much we bust our brains for you ?..

It depends on who's giving the compliment and what they're complimenting you about. I do think men are more sincere than women with their compliments.

If they're being said just to say them, then yes. If the peson handing out the compliment means it, then there is nothing better.

Not if they come from the heart, those kinds of compliments are just other people's way of telling them how much you mean to them. :)

Ego strokes are always nice but only if the person giving the complement really means it.
Empty words are meaningless.
