I would like to know if WLAN can be as fast as a direct connection via ethernet. The router is in the room next to where my pc is. Would the performance of a WLAN card of a well-known brand be as fast as a cheap one?

In ethernet u can get 100/1000 Mbps. But Wlan won't be fast always. It can easily affected by light sources, electrical disturbances... in inside house itself. outside have more problems. Cheap cards will definetly reduce performance because the costlier ones use components of high quality which will less affected. Sound cards with golden connector have high performance than cheap ones. same here. Just once lay ethernet cable which will be there for moreeeeee years with good performance.

For general surfing, Wireless is fine, VERY unlikely to have an internet connection faster than the wireless.

For an INTERNAL netowork solution, CABLE will ALWAYS be faster than wireless. Wifi in G band CAN do 54mb under OPTIMAL conditions, basic ethernet is 100mb, and if you have a cat6 ready system, 1,000 mb
