The term you are looking for is 'litter' (not as in rubbish) Not 'sedan chair' which is a term that didn't some into use until the 18th century. Before the manufacture of coaches royalty and other persons of high rank were carried in variously shaped and designed 'litters' - depending on the culture.

A sedan chair is carried by two bearers (a litter, more of a bed with curtains, is carried by four or more). They are not restricted to royalty just to those who can afford them.
