Sunday is the first day of the week. The week is designed around Jewish beliefs. The Sabbath is the "day of rest" when God finished creation, also called the seventh day. The Sabbath is Saturday. So, if Saturday is the seventh day then Sunday is the first. Sunday also gets it's name from ancient beliefs that in the morning when the sun came up, the world started anew, thus a new weeks starts on Sunday.

The first day of the week varies all over the world. In most cultures, Sunday is regarded as the first day of the week although many observe Monday as the first day of the week. According to the Bible, the Sabbath or Saturday is the last day of the week which marks Sunday as the first day of the week for many Jewish and Christian faiths, while many countries regard Monday as the first day of the week. According to the international standard ISO 8601, Monday shall be the first day of the week ending with Sunday as the seventh day of the week. Although this is the international standard, countries such as the United States still have their calendars refer to Sunday as the start of the seven-day week. Nowadays, both Saturday and Sunday are seen as days of rest, and some calendars show Monday as the first day of the week since it is the first day of the "work week" (Monday - Friday only).

Like everything else that s considered antiquated since the the Age of Reason (and consequent industrial revolution) Theologically the first day of the week is Sunday. With the onset of practicality and commerce, modern times has dictated the first day of the week as being Monday. Hence, since we no longer live under theocratic rule, MONDAY, not SUNDAY is now considered to be the first day of the week for all Western nations.
REF: "Biblical references refer to the Sabbath as being the day of rest at the end of the week, which is Sunday (or Saturday in different religions). The international standard ISO-8601, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), has decreed that Monday shall be the first day of the week, internationally; Regardless of a region s system of belief."

You are both correct
================
International standards have made Monday the first day of the week as this is usually the first working day and Sunday the last day and a day of rest
... but ...
historically, Sunday was the first day ... that is because Saturday was the Sabbeth for both Christians and Jews (the seventh day and a day of worship and rest)
... but ...
because the Jews used Saturday for the Sabbeth, Christians (to be different) used Sunday (when Jesus rose from the dead) as their day of worship and rest ... hence Sunday was a weekend day (at beginning of the week) and Saturday was a weekend day (at the end of the week).

If you are a religious Bible student, you know that the seventh day (Sabbath) beginns at Friday sundown. (and the Evening and the Morning were the sixth day. Thus the Heavens and the Earth were finnished, and all the host of them. AND ON THE SEVENTH DAY GOD (Elohim) ENDED HIS WORK WHICH HE HAD MADE. AND GOD BLESSED THE SEVENTH DAY AND SANCTIFIED IT (Genesis 1:31 through Genesis 2:3 0 So you see, the Sabbath was Sanctified long before the "Jews" existed. As to someone's reference to Luke saying that Friday is the "day of preparation" The Day of Preparation is the day before the FEAST DAY of the Passover. The Christ was the sacrificial Lamb for our sins, of which the lamb in Exodus 12:3 is but a symbol. The Sabbath that was coming on as they hurried to entomb the Christ was the Feast day. The Savior stated more than once he would be in the tomb 3 days AND 3 nights. Would the Son of The Most High lie??? He was entomben just before Sundown, NOT FRIDAY, but WEDNESDAY, just before the High Day (or Sabbath) of The Passover. The women observed the Sabbath Mark16:1,2. Luke, however tells of them buying the spices and then resting on the "indeed" Sabbath, or Saturday. That year the Feast day of the Passover fell on a Thursday. The Christ was "Sacrificed on Wednesday, the day of Preparation, was entomed just before Sundown, was in the tomb 3 days and 3 night,as he said he would, and rose Saturday just before Sunset. "While it was yet dark, (John 20:1), Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and The Messiah was gone from the tomb. According to Scripture, He did not rise on Sunday. The only verse that alludes to Sunday resurrection (Mark 16:9) was not found in the earliest texts and, in addition, is a mistranslation from the Greek. Most bibles have a footnote stating so. It would more properly be translated "Yahshua was risen early before the first of the week"(Restoration Study Bible, Yahweh's Restoration Ministry, Holts Summit, Mo).

The first day of the week is Sunday. The last day of the week is Saturday. It is clearly written in the bible but if you dont believe in the Bible you can simply look at a calendar and notice that the week starts on Sunday, not Monday. :)

I have always thought it was Sunday. However, the first day of the calendar 1/1/0001 is a Monday. Why would a calendar begin in the middle of the week? I think it might be Monday.
