These are tools I can recommend as reliable, having tested all of them within the last two months (I love my drive imaging software!)

firewall:

Comodo (http://www.comodo.com), or
PC Tools (http://www.pctools.com/firewall), though Comodo will be a bit easier to use.

antivirus:
Avira (http://www.free-av.com)
AVAST! Home (http://www.avast.com)
AVG (http://free.grisoft.com)
all provide realtime protection and automatic updates.

antispyware:

Spyware Terminator (http://www.SpywareTerminator.com) or
Spyware Doctor (http://pack.google.com)
either one will give you good, realtime protection, along with
Ad-Aware Free (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_a... and
Spybot S&D (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/downl...
for additional removal ability.

Finally, a generic intrusion protection tool is a good supplement to the tools in the first three categories. The best one I've test is System Safety Monitor Free edition (http://www.syssafety.com) which does a better job than most of the commercial intrusion prevention applications from major vendors.

Stay with Norton. No FreeBee anti-virus software can give you full protection. If it was possible to update your protection on a daily basis for free then the likes of Norton and McAfee would be doing it. It simply cannot be done. As I have said before on this subject, "If you pay nowt, you'll get nowt". If you use a FreeBee then you are taking the risk of having your private files invaded by a Trojan Horse. You need the big boys in protection to take on the big boys in cyber crime. Pay up and stay safe.

Norton sucks.. go to grisoft, and download avg free.. I gave up Norton cuz it was slowing my system down. I have been using AVG for almost 2 years and never had a problem.

Mine ran out too. I tried to renew my subscription on their web page, It started to download but packed in after a few megs had downloaded. I checked with my Bank to find that they had TAKEN THE MONEY. I have been trying to get a refund or the software for about 2 MONTHS now. have even tried snail mail but the ignorent gits won't even have the decency to reply. I'm in the process of taking them to court cos I'm a pensioner and 60 odd quid is money I could spend elsewhere. I have gone back to MacAfee COS I NEVER HAD ANY TROUBLE FROM THEM IN THE PAST,THEY'RE CHEAPER TOO Ditch Norton is my advice.

Try AVG - it's been good enough for me for over a year now - Norton and MacAfee are good, but not that good. AVG is basic, but cuts out a lot of junk - it will also remove any Trojan worms - or so they claim. The choice is yours.

You can try AVG or check out McAfee. These are both very user friendly and work very well. I have tried both. One thing that is nice about McAfee is that they have a "site advisor" this feature will let you know if you enter a site that is known for spreading spyware or other malicious activities. It will also let you know what other sites that one is linked to and this can be good to know. McAfee is a powerful program but it is usually only a "free to try" and will eventually want you to buy it, but is a great temporary fix. AVG is free ware and you will be able to keep it and it works pretty well.

get rid of Norton, get AVG. Norton is more and more frequently being pre-installed as "crap-ware". I had it on my new Dell too. I think there's something called the decrappifier (seriously) that gets rid of all the junkware they try to sell.

AVG better than norton in a way that it dosent slow down and use up memory like norton does , and protects the comp really well.
