For example, I use a Asus R1F laptop and it does not have the 1680 x 1050. However, when my Samsung 226BW comes, I would like to know if when I plug it in, it would allow me to view 1680 x 1050 resolutions.

Or if anything else, I could select a higher resolution and have the same clarity. Either one would be fine. It just has resolutions higher and lower than the 1680 x 1050 resolution.

The internal screen of the laptop probably won't handle it but it should be able to output that to an external monitor.

Just install the monitor driver from the CD that comes with your new monitor and that should add 1680 x 1050 (at least if you've set it to output to the new monitor).

Pretty much anything can handle outputting that resolution with no problems.

REsolution depends on two things. graphics card& monitor. While graphic card can have many diff resolution, most monitor won't support all. u have to install the exact driver of ur monitor. Then it will show the resolution u can have. Check samsung website whether 226BW supports ur resolution.

Well it should be able to, you see firstly to view such a resolution there are two requirements:
Ample Grpahics Card Processing power and RAM
And a suppporting monitor of that resolution.
So if your monitor supports it, it's just a matter of if your graphics card can display such a resolution. It should be able to, as today's laptops normally can.
