I used to use it a lot until my brother opened his mouth. Now I don't use it much but does it really clean your hands? When you use it, it's supposed to kill some germs on your hands, right? Okay so do the germs stay on your hands dead? Or do they vanish like magic? Wouldn't your hands still be 'dirty' even if you use a hand sanitizer? What is it meant for exactly? To use as an alternate way to clean your hands to get ready to eat? Or what?

The best way to clean your hands is with good old fashioned soap and water. Soap and water is highly effective at killing bacteria and denaturing viral proteins.

Some of newer hand sanitisers state that they can kill 99% of bacteria, and don't require water. They usually consist of a gel that releases alcohol onto your hands to kill the bugs.

This is effective, but at the end of the process your hands do still have dirt and dead bacteria. As the bacteria are dead, you are unlikely to get sick from what is on your hands, but you still have dirty hands.

The main advantage is when clean running water is scarce, such as when travelling, deployed on military operations, in a drought etc

But when its available, give me soap and water anyday!

Well, the moment you finish washing your hands, they are pretty clean...until you pick something up or touch something. Washing your hands is as close to cleanliness as you can get, It's those foreign objects that make life miserable. In other words...your hands won't stay clean.

Hand sanitizers have alcohol in them, and not the edible kind mind you. Alcohol is a poison that among other things leaches water and nutrients out of living things, esp. micro-organisms. So basically you are "crop dusting" your hands. It's very safe though, unless you use it so often your hand start to chap.
