My fiancee's brother died of lukemia years ago. We want to name our first son after him. In this situation, is "Junior" or "II" supposed to be used, or would he just have his name and no suffix?

You would not put Jr. or II on the end because the name of your husband's brother is not the father of your child. You only name a child after the father with the ending of Jr. or II.

You can't use the Jr. Because that is only used when a son has the exact name of his father.
II or the term the second is used if.....for instance your son is named after a person with exactually the same name.....most often a grandfather- or other family members.

You really don't need a suffix, but if you do then use the second. But if your fiancees brother had a different last name than will be used for the child, you can't call him the 11 aka the second.

Please be sure that if you use the exact name that you son doesn't become the shrine for the lost family memeber. It can be a huge obligation & in a way a huge thing to put on a child.
You might constantly be explaning to people......"this is my son _____ He was named after his dad's brother, _____, who died years ago. Gosh can you imagine a thing like that for a child to carry around. He might thing he needs to live up to the title. Or he might feel like he isn't an individual with his very own name. You would be honor ing your son's uncle by deminishing your son's individuality.
I could suggest to use the middle name perhaps if anything.
Often it is better to let a generation before using the name

Just some things for you to consider before using a dead uncles name.

My daughter for awhile wanted to name her baby due in 1/08 after her brother, my son who died 5 years ago.at the age of 21) I can't imagine holding my new grandson with the name of my son now gone. Fortunatly the baby is a girl and their last baby. Had it been a boy, I would of mentioned to her that it might make me uncomfortable to use her brothers name. Yet, I would support her with what ever choice thay made.

No suffix. Just name, only use Junior or II when your naming your son after the father.

The child would use neither, since he'll be named after an uncle.
Junior, Jr., is used when the first name and surname are the same as the father's; there can be a different middle name.
The numbering - I, II, IV - is used when the first, middle and last names are exactly the same between father and son.

This is from Behindthename.com..

Junior is used to distinguish a child with the same name as his/her parent. The following conditions apply:

The Junior must be the child of the parent, not a grandson or granddaughter.
The names must be exactly the same, including the middle name.
The parent must still be living.

'II' is used whenever any close relative, including for example a grandfather or a great-uncle, shares the same name as the child.

I hope that clears it up for you. It's a nice tribute to your husband's brother.

It's a great tribute that you are planning.. In this case I believe the protocol would be to simply give the child the same name, without any suffix. The child would learn of his namesake, but would not be a Jr. b/c he is not "the son of".

Hope this helps!

You might want to use Junior during your son's childhood years, but when he is older and looking for a job, II would be much more appropriate.

Junior is a low ranking. If I were twenty years old, I would appreicate being treated (And addressed) as an adult.

II is appropriate because he will be "the second." It doesn't matter who the first is -- the father, grandfather, uncle, etc. Junior is only appropriate if he is named for his father.

Junior would definately not be appropriate, but II could be, seeing as he is named after him!

No, you just name him after his brother....the Jr, or II is for when one has a son, etc., etc.
