He's a fictional character made up so that followers of religion will be afraid to listen to anyone other than their preacher.
Fear = Power
Many governments will try to provoke fear, because it's an inexpensive way to get people to do what they want, and it's prooven to work.
Religious leaders will call satan the great "trickster" to keep followers in there path, and keep the sheep from "straying".

Looking through various mythos about the "bad" concept, it is often portrayed as a "trickster". Examples would be Lucifer convincing Eve to try the apple, or Loki substituting the mistletoe dart so Baldur was killed, and similar things around the world. The REASON is probably simply that our human nature wants to have somebody to blame for the wrong things we do.

Satan is a lier and deceiver. He deceived Adam and Eve by telling them that God didn't mean what He told them would happen if they disobeyed Him (God)...it was a lie and the whole human race fell because of it.
Today he uses lies and deceit to try to trick, tempt, discourage, and destroy people and keep them from God. He makes evil look good, enjoyable, and fun....without showing them the cost that will be paid for them.
God says I am come that you might have Life (eternal Life)...and "He that has the Son(Jesus) has Life, and he who has not the Son shall not see Life and the wrath of God abides on him (or her) because of their sin which they inherited through Adam.
Satan has been allowed (for now) to be the ruler of this world. All you have to do is look around you and see the evil ....is it getting any better? No....and it won't until Jesus comes back....and Satan already knows the battle with God is lost....he just wants to take as many as he can with him.
God had a plan to save those who were willing to listen...but He always allows us the choice.

Well, from a biblical perspective, Satan is called a trickster because he is an expert at an art that would, in the IT security field, be called "social engineering" today.
His methods of controlling people is to manipulate them. One of his favorite tactics is to use half-truths to confuse people into doing things they ought not to do.
For instance, he would tell people what they wanted to hear in order to get them to do what he wanted them to. Or he would quote the bible out of context to justify something that was not true.
If you read the bible passages below you'll get a general idea of what I am talking about.

He creates challenges that can distract or divert a mythological hero from their ultimate goal. Read Joseph Campbell, and do your own homework.
