Elvis was before my time, so even though i have heard some of his music and like some of it; I just am curious how most people view him? This is not meant to be a putdown of Elvis.

I am 39 today, so Elvis was around part of my life. I believe he is considered the King of Rock because he was an innovator of styles / music and radical dance moves of the time. In his younger days he always wore black leather jackets and had a cool hairstyle. In my opinion he will always be the KING. Today you see rock stars with leather outfits, hot cars and harleys. Elvis was a humble guy, fame didnt go to his head he had "class"

I'm not a fan of Elvis, but for what he did and in that time period he was the King! There is some controversy over where and who he got his style from and later turned his back on. However he is still the King!

I grew up with the music, and I believe he's vastly overrated! He couldn't act, even after all of those movies! And, he DID have say on what he would or wouldn't appear in! He just took the easy way out! Think what power he had over everyone and everything, and we're told that he couldn't pick and choose his scripts! I cannot believe that! He couldn't write his own music; supposedly he helped with "Heartbreak Hotel". He sort of played guitar but stopped doing any of that. He lived a very weird life and forced others to live it, too, even giving Priscilla drugs that he was used to but could have killed her! She was a young girl, too~far too young for him.

Back when I was growing up, everyone listened to Elvis, and everyone went to every Elvis movie. When I was about 15, I thought, "Wait a minute! Do I really like the man's voice? No. Can he act? No. Do I want to spend my money on his movie instead of another I'd like better? No." I realized that I wasn't an Elvis fan, and I stepped away from the crowd. When my sister reached my age, she had completely turned her back on the Elvis stuff, too. By then, we were deep in the British Invasion and were surrounded by a mindboggling array of groups and singers. By then, it was very clear that Elvis ranked way down there although his worshippers continued supporting him.

Even when I was growing up surrounded by pictures of Elvis in magazines, on TV and on album covers, I knew I didn't think that he was handsome or even particularly good-looking. I was born in 1951, so I figure that I must have been a pretty savvy little girl to size up whether I wanted to follow the crowd or find my own way, which I've done throughout my life.

By the way, my mom's younger sister is still crazy about Elvis after all these years!

I disagree about Elvis "leading the way" and creating what he did when everyone truly knows that he borrowed and copied. The performers who originated these sounds weren't played on "regular" radio, and it would be awhile before recording studios started accepting non-white groups and singers~everyone from Chuck Berry to Marvin Rainwater, from Ritchie Valens to Little Richard. It wasn't until into the Sixties that studios started signing up as much talent as they could because they didn't know where the next hits were going to come from.

When you consider what was popular music before Elvis in the 50 and how he openned the door for what is now rock and roll. there really was no one like him before. Elvis influenced the Beatles, and rolling stones so without Elvis rock and roll music would not have evolved as it has

No he's not overrated. I just hate elvis impersonators, they're so cheesy and they cause people to forget how great he was because they turn him into a joke.

Oh and Elvis didn't even want to do all those crappy movies that he did. He was under contract and he tried to get out of it but he couldn't. His friends said it made him depressed for a while.

Overrated for sure, same as the ugly John Lennon, ugh. The young Elvis was clean cut and kinda handsome, (not my time either since I was born in 73), but that's about all I can see. He had a twin brother too, know that? I believe he died as a child.
