a firewall is a program or a physical box (it can be either one) that blocks bad things from coming in to your computer from the internet. . a firewall is a GOOD thing, because it blocks worms, etc, and hacker attempts. .
to get limewire to work, you might have to change some settings in the firewall, but if I were you, I'd delete Limewire instead. . Limewire usually is FULL of viruses and spyware, and will wreck your computer before long.

I used Limewire before and saw the same msg. you do. It doesn't mean anything bad, but just that Limewire detects your firewall. If you're having trouble downloading a song, either retry the download, or choose another source on that list (that showed up for your search) for the song download. A note of caution about Limewire - make sure you are running a GOOD top notch antivirus software, which has been kept updated on a regular basis, because some of the files downloaded with Limewire are LOADED with viruses and such.

Everyone else can tell you in an intelligent form. I will just say GET IT! I have one called ZoneAlarm it works just fine.. It keeps programs that may be contaminated with crap from your computer without your permission.. You can also block programs like apple for your ipod which likes to run anyway, and limewire so your computer won't run slow.. You can set a firewall to ask before it allows it to open up on your computer.. That's my dummy explination.

A firewall is a program that limits what connections can come in to your computer and go out from your computer, if you are using limewire, a firewall is essential.
A firewall needs to be configured to allow limewire to use the internet.

your using a point-to-point file sharing system. your firewall hides your local machines and its ports with a single IP address, not the final point
-you have to enable some sort of pass through protocol
(secure method but impractical for the anonymous server)
or
-put a specific machine in a de-militarized zone to accept the various ports used with your limewire warez
(whoa, risky as the hackers can get to...you!)

Firewall is ways to prevent people from seeing your computer directly from the internet, so in a way, its good, but if you havent a clue what application needs internet access, its as useful as a house without a roof.

Heh, what's most ironic about this situation is that the firewall is "good" from a relative standpoint.
