What is the difference between a cat, and an animal?
None, a cat is an animal that belongs to the animal family.
Likewise, a Core 2 Duo is a processor that belongs to the Dual Core Family.
The Dual Core family includes:
-Core Duo
-Core 2 Duo
-Pentium D(not really a dual core, but it's two pentium 4 processors, one on top of the other)
-AMD X2

A dual core processor is a processor that has two cores on the one die (so you get two processors on a single chip).
A Core 2 Duo is a specific type of Dual Core processor made by Intel (right now it's the best one out there in terms of performance per watt) and is Intel's mainstream processor competing with the AMD Athlon 64 X2 on the Desktop and AMD Turion X2 in laptops. Intel's low end processor right now is the Pentium Dual Core which on the desktop is a cut down Core 2 Duo (and in laptops is a cut down Core Duo).

Dual CORE is a Pentium D which can be an AMD or Intel
Core 2 Duo is its own thing. Intel produces it.
Dual Core is ment to be over clocked
Core 2 Duo runs cooler and faster
Core 2 Duo is newer and cheaper in a way
I recommend Core 2 Duo. I have a Dual Core and I constantly have to turn of one core to run certain programs properly.
I "speed lag" in Everquest 2 and World of Warcraft a lot because of the Dual Core. Everytime I start up these program, I have to set an affinity.
