Ok, that sounds mean, but my really good friend just had a baby, and god love her, she's just not cute. At all. I keep hoping she'll look more average and old manish, but she still looks like a scary alien child (she's a month old). When I'm around my friend she keeps saying, "Oh, isn't she cute...?" and I just can't keep coming up with responses. It's getting stressful. Any ideas?

Good idea about going for the details being cute... that should last for quite awhile.
Anything I could say to get her to stop saying, "Isn't she cute?" to everyone (I've heard her do this in the store even to people she doesn't know). It's uncomfortable to see people try to figure out how to respond...

Anthropologically, biologically we are all predisposed to thinking our OWN relatives -blood kin, are cute and worthy, and adorable-no matter how ugly. God honest truth. So a mother will only see the beauty, so taht they protect their young. But you don't have that, and so are likely to think MANY kids who aren't in your own gene pool are not attractive. How many babies were in your own family you thought were ugly? Just curious-as it doesn't always work, but for the majority, they will know what I mean.
Okay, next most babies are ugly when they are first born...their head squishes the wrong way sometimes and the doctors mold it back, and then they hav eto grow inti their bodies a bit more, as they build up their baby fat..The baby will get more attractive as it ages...give it 6 months.
Anyways, you could say things like "She's lovely" "She's sweet" "You must be so happy "
Babies need to grow into their skin still.

You don't have to say anything if you don't want to, there isn't a rule book about having to complement parents on their kids anyway. If you feel you need to just complement on the kids clothes , that they bought some really nice outfits for the kid. Sometimes the ugliest kids turn to be the most beautiful when they grow up. For the love of God don't tell the parents that you think the baby is ugly though, you'd be asking for it then.

Just focus on some part that you can say something good about. "Look at that huge happy smile!" or, "She's got such sparkly eyes!" or "What a lively expression!" If you can't say the baby is adorable, and many are not, in the typical sense, you can distract the mom's attention by suggesting the baby is amazingly alert and intelligent and responsive, and save yourself from having to focus on the appearance.

Well honestly, somtimes it's best to lie....just say she's adorable. Maybe when she gets older she'll look a little more attractive? Give her a chance. No need to upset the mother by telling her she's got an ugly kid. Besides beauty is on the inside....

Maybe she's thinking the same way as you and she's seeking approval from others. Just smile and laugh, until she fills out. Poor thing. I'm sure she'll be cute soon enough.

A little white lie never hurt anyone.
Most newborns are a little ugly, anyway. Give that baby time. She might get cuter. Newborns tend to look a little goofy.
That's all I've got.

I think you are not a mother and you do not understanding the feeling of a mother towards her child. No matter how ugly the child is it is definitely the most precious and cutest thing for her. I think you just need to understand that.

newborns are all squished up in looks..it takes a couple of monthhs for the real cutness to come out.
For the sake of your health(instead of stumbling over your words and having offended a still hormal mom)..., put on a huge smile..and say..."ohhh she is sooo precious!!!!"..
which she is precious...that is not a lie..and to her mom..she is the most precious thing on the earth right now..

I'd point out a feature - "Oh wow - she has your eyes!" Point out how cute her outfit is - or how amazing those tiny toes are. If that doesn't work point out that you think she looks just like Mom (or Dad).
Babies aren't cute when they are newborn except to their moms. . . (and in rare occasions dads and other family members).

You could always tell the mother about what a great personality and sense of humor her baby has.
