Just like the paralellism with the Zodiac. There are 12 months in a year. There are 12 Tribes in Israel (originally). [Jacob = Israel]

There are passages in the Bible about the 12 tribes and the stones they are represented by on the Breastpiece of the High Priest. Sorry I don't know the verses or books. Probably in Leviticus, maybe Deuteronomy?

Also mention of this imagry in Revelation of John. The "gates" of the New Jerusalem.

Has to do with "birthstones" too.

Jesus lost one of his twelve disciples Judas Isacorit. In the book of Revelation, when talking of the 144,000, the tribe of Dan is not mentioned. I think Manassah is mentioned instead. Dan's blessing from Jacob was that he was a snake in the way. Jesus was probaly talking about Judas when he said, "Haven't I chosen you twelve and one of you is a devil."

The twelve sons of jacob, I believe were named in a fashion to show the growth towards Christ with Jacob. The first son was born to Leah and was "Reuben" whose name means "See a Son". The second son born to Leah was "Simeon" whose name means "Hearing". The third son born to Leah was "Levi" and it means "joined"The fourth son born to Leah was "Judah" and it means "praise"The fifth son, who was born to Bilhah, was "Dan" and it means "judging".The sixth son, born unto Bilhah, was "Napthali" and his name means "wrestling"The seventh son, who was born to Zilpah, was named "Gad" . His name means "troop".The eighth son, born to Zilpah, was "Asher" and his name means "happy".The ninth son was born to Leah, and he was "Issachar". His name means "hire or reward"The tenth son, born to Leah, was "Zebulon" and his name means "dwelling"The eleventh son, born to Rachel, was "Joseph" and his name means "adding".The twelfth son son, born to Rachel, was "Benjamin" which means "Son of my right hand".
How these might tie to the disciples is otherwise beyond me.
The jabber of many professors leads you to believe that the 12 disciples of Jesus were creating the church, the twelve sons of Jacob (who would lead 12 tribes of Israel) would lead to 12 apostles to lead the replacement. It's all up to interpretation, and I am not a professor so I do not interpret well enough to lead you fully in the right direction.
