On average, a public school is going to be better than the typical private school (I'm not talking about thew few elite private schools that only rich people can afford). Teachers at public schools normally make more than someone at a private school, so the better teachers are going to wind up at public schools.
The quality of public schools does vary though based on locale as County and/or City property taxes have a huge impact on public school budgets. While some teacher strikes are bogus, I don't think teachers' unions are all bad. But like any other entity there are some unions that are bad apples.
Getting rid of the public school system will not benefit a whole lot of people, it helps create a larger divide between the upper class and the rest of the country, and will only increase the illiteracy of the population because not everyone can afford to send their kids to private schools, much less good ones (which are pretty few and far between).

I think "ruining" is way too strong a word. But it is noteworthy that the strongest unions in the the US today are the public employee unions, including teachers. Public institutions are for the most part free of the need to compete in the open market. Most government workers I know in my age bracket (late 50s) have more days off, more benefits, and a better retirement package than virtually any of those who work in the private sector, to say nothing of those who are self employed. In the next ten years or so, as boomers like me pass the age of 65, we're going to see more and more public employees living at the expense of younger workers, and private sector workers who cannot afford full retirement. There may be some resentment. Most teachers are neither bad guys or heroes. But you can say the same about insurance agents and waiters.

Yep, I agree. You don't get a quality product from a union shop. Since our country needs well educated citizens to function, the teachers unions are ruining the country. The public education system would be fine if it weren't for the teachers unions.

i'm a public college instructor and that i accept as true with most of the topics of that you write. there is a large number of "drama", notwithstanding i don't believe of the drama is being taught contained in the lecture room. i imagine it truly is a made from the society wherein we stay. purely look on the commonplace television shows at present. maximum of them are reality shows that motivate drama. the familiar public, consisting of children and adults, looks to love this (i'm not particular why - human nature i wager). besides, my lecture room is about studying the biology curriculum that my district has designed. i imagine a number of those different actual-existence skills that you wrote could be useful. The questions that are raised are - what portion of the curriculum do you want to shrink out? or the position could those skills be in good structure into an latest curriculum (math type???) the different challenge is that a number of those different "skills" go over into relatives values form classes and, even with the very undeniable reality that I agree that those are extreme to turning out to be a significantly better individual and greatest a more desirable effective existence, i don't believe of the states favor to contain most of those matters contained in the curriculum. regrettably, at the same time as the US keen to split church and state, most of the fee form studying could not be coated. The very last factor I actual have is that some scholars experience that college needs to entertain them and if it would not then they don't have any interest. studying is a 2-way highway wherein sturdy coaching engages scholars to imagine, share concepts, and be lively contributors. thankfully, in my type we do about 20 labs in the course of the approach the 365 days. those labs enable scholars to be lively newcomers, notwithstanding after we do any e book paintings or do something that would not quite interest them, they turn off and do not supply a lot attempt. it type of feels that until eventually it truly is relaxing and actually thrilling, scholars don't have any interst. often times, studying is about reading (silently or aloud) answering questions from a e book, memorizing, or learning independently. Like a large number of issues in existence, you purely get out what you install.

Another bite at unions ain't it? Start with big OIL COMPANIES, work your way down to greedy Republicans voting for corporate welfare, then companies outsourcing jobs to slave labor markets...so now few can make a living in America without TWO low wage jobs that Bush won't allow to unionize i.e. airport security. With both parents working, its no wonder a teacher has to be mother, father, friend and possibly, if they get the time, a TEACHER to the kids. When will you repugs WAKE UP !

If you want to blame anything related to education to ruining our country, you need to blame the government's lack of funding it properly. Systems need to be put in place where everyone has a true equal chance at an equal education. We do not have that in the United States and currently, "No Child Left Behind" is not helping that at all!

Maybe if they were better funded, so that people would actually see a point in spending $50k to go to college to become a teacher, maybe we could get some worth while teachers. But since we can't, no it is people like you, who want to gripe about every little thing, and act like everyone else owes you something, just because you pay a little bit of taxes.
I bet if we took away corporate welfare, and all the money we are spending to influence governments of other counties, like the new milenium fund, we could afford far better instructors in all our schools, what do you think?
