I've heard that he was deaf, but I question if he was completely or partly deaf.

I think it came on gradually but eventually he was completely deaf. Some theorize it was secondary to syphilis.

I don't think he started out deaf, but I believe he did eventually did become completely deaf.

Yes, he was. He started losing his hearing while still in his 20s and by the end of his life, he was completely deaf.
