if so, would you be more insulted if someone called you "boy".

I would very much understand that it was meant as an insult. And since I was raised in North America, I've been taught that being called a woman is one of the worst things you can call a man. Apparently, even worse than being called a liberal. So, I don't think I could avoid having a visceral reaction to such an insult. Beyond the visceral, I think my reaction would be more at having someone trying to insult me than the actual words used. I don't think "boy" would have the same connotation for me, but I understand that for some it would. Would it be insulting for a woman to be told, "don't be such a man"?

Not even a little. Reason being is because I know that I'm in every way what I consider a man is, love. You see men have this stupid thing that they develop over time which can grow to an enormous size and in some cases, even big enough to engulf the very male who posseses it. What I'm talking about is an EGO, which stands for Edging God Out. How you can detect if a man has one and how big it is, call him things like a girl or boy, and any other word that you might think would insult and if they have any fear of these things you would be able to see it in their face, and in their voice. To be offended would mean it's something that they actually thought about and just might be. So no I would not be offended.

More insulted by "boy", but I'm black so there's a different history and meaning there. If someone called me "woman" or "girl" it would depend on the context. If I am called "such a girl" or "gay" for knowing about interior design or knowing color words many guys don't use, I just find it amusing, just like I take 'weird" as a good thing even if others don't. It has a lot to do with intent. And my own mood.

Such a comment is almost always an accusation that a man is being overly emotional/sensitive OR lacking strength/courage.

I doubt I would BE insulted, but I would certainly recognize it as an ATTEMPT to insult me.

'Boy' for a man is like 'girl' for a woman. While either term can be an insult meaning 'immature', this depends heavily on context. In general the terms are used affectionately, sometimes even in a complementary sense to imply youth, such as boyish charm or girlish figure.

One has to be SERIOUSLY anal to find insult in terms like Boyfriend or Girlfriend.

Well if someone was insulting you, as you describe is trying to insult, then of course.

If you call a boy/man a woman or a man a boy then of course they are trying to insult you so why wouldn't you be insulted and give them what they deserve

Anyone who called me a girl/woman I would look at as if they were a child, because that is something a child would use as an insult (Though when insulting a man in Spanish, I use the Feminine version of the word. The whole cultural Machismo thing.).

Anyone who calls me a boy that ain't my father would incur a verbal assault that would have them in tears, sitting in a running shower, trying to scrub off the filth.

I would not be insulted, but would be very amused and curious if they have some vision problems. For one thing I have a goatee and receding hairline.... would not make for a very pretty woman at all!!!

heck no!

If they truly know me, then i guess i have some inward examination to do, don't I?

And if they don't (which would be more often), then i guess that's their problem, not mine.

Plus, I believe not being insulted by what someone else says has to do with confidence of who i am.

If we have a problem with what someone says about us, we have truly weakened, and taken on their stuff!
