okay, so I'm 13, in seventh grade, and i am auditioning for dinner theater [ a show made up of broadway/movie songs like wicked, rent, fame, high school ,musical, grease etc.] So, I was thinking for my audition that I would do the song The Way I Am by Ingrid Michaelson. I know, its weird to pick it especially me being a guy. But i think it would show the notes I can reach, even though I don't sound like her. It's a guy version of her song basically. So I was wondering if this would be a good idea, and if not, then tell me some songs that would benefit me. thanks for reading.

I think it's great that you want to audition for the show, but if the style of the show is musical theatre then that is the type of song you need to audition with. You didn't give your vocal range (tenor, baritone, bass, etc.) but at your age I would guess tenor or baritone at the lowest.

Usually you choose 16-32 bars from a song. Most people choose something near the end that has the most 'oomph' to it. Some songs may be a duet so you obviously have to choose a part that's appropriate to sing solo. The first art listed is the song title, the second is the name of the show it's from.

I would suggest:
The Kite - You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown
Summer Nights - Grease
Consider Yourself - Oliver
Corner Of the Sky - Pippin
Something's Coming - West Side Story
All You Can Do Is Wait - Anne & Gilbert
There is a Sucker Born Ev'ry Minute - Barnum
I Talk To The Trees - Paint Your Wagon
What More Can I Say - The Falsettos
Grand Knowing You - She Loves Me
It's A Fish - The Apple Tree
Gigi - Gigi
You're The Top - Anything Goes
It's Delovely - Anything Goes
That Face - The Producers
Beautiful Girl - Singin' In The Rain
Once In Love With Amy - Where's Charley?

Sheet music can be found at libraries if you don't have the means to buy your own. You make copies, mark it up so the accompanist knows what to play, practice singing from the music so you don't get caught singing in the wrong key (many cast recordning don't match the sheet music so if you only practice singing to a CD you'll be lost when the accompanist plays your music from the sheet) You can also download sheet music from musicnotes.com for a fee if you can't find it from other sources. Amazon has a ton of sheet music as well but it must be shipped so it takes longer.

good luck!

to add to Marianne D, theatre songs are always best...they can show not only your vocal capability but also acting and movement.
Remember that in your auditions not only to nail the song, but show the characters emotion and add in some movement (doesnt need to be fully choreographed, just something to show you MOVE)

some other suggestions include:
I Can Do That - A Chorus Line
Bigger Isn't Better - Barnum
I Am What I Am - La Cage Aux Folles
Being Alive -Company
Race You to the Top of the Morning - The Secret Garden
Without Love - Hairspray
Tonight - West Side Story ***(often popular)
Something's Comin' - West Side Story
The Impossible Dream - Man of La Mancha
Gethsemane - Jesus Christ Superstar
All Good Gifts - Godspell
Music of the Night - Phantom of the Opera
Razzle Dazzle - Chicago
Too Darn Hot - Kiss Me Kate

from some of the shows ur doing you could do:
wicked - Dancing Through Life
rent - One song glory, I'll cover you
fame - Can't Keep it Down, Make Magic

hope they might help you out

That could be cool! If you decided you want to do something more traditional, a male solo that I have always loved from The King and I, called "I Have Dreamed." Listen, and see if you like it!

The song starts at :27 seconds in, so start listening for it then.

That's the first song that came to mind. You might also think about doing something from The Phantom of the Opera, Cats or Les Miserables! Always great choices for theater, because they show off your voice.

The song you have sounds cool, maybe you could post a clip of you singing it on a webcam on youtube, link it here and see what people think then??

Good luck no matter what you decide!!
