I say Sean Penn

I would have to go with Sean Penn also. He fits easily into any genre of film, or role given to him.
Some of my other choices have already mentioned, but there's one that hasn't, and don't laugh when I say John Travolta.
Back in the 70's he was so typecast as Vinni Barbarino. Then his roles in the disco flick 'Saturday Night Fever', and 'The Urban Cowboy' seemed to put him on top for awhile. Those roles later killed his career through the 80's. Nobody wanted him. Until Mr. Tarantino brought him back to life again. His skills as an actor are top notch.
Playing everything from an angel, to a killer, and very convincingly in my opinion.
But I'd have to say Sean Penn would be my #1 pick.
