They're terms of endearment. Words have magic and cast a spell on someone especially when spoken in a sweet, loving way. Its a self-gratifying experience for both the speaker and the hearer.

Growing up in the south, I heard many people use these terms of endearment to friends and complete strangers. It's sincere in that the people using the term are friendly people and think the friend/stranger is too. I find myself using "sweetie" and even "babe" a lot. I can't help it, it just comes out when I like a person. I suppose it's habit and a commonplace from where I grew up.

I think it is habit to be honest. I have always felt very strange saying any of those terms but now they flow freely. When I was dating I would avoid them like the plague because I never meant them. Once I believed they should be said I would start and after a few weeks they came naturally to those people. I do not believe that they have anything to do with love though as I loved my husband long before I called him sweetie. I do say sweetie to my daughter with out hesitation though.

I do agree with the statement above though that some people do use them freely. I tend to feel strange being called them also by strangers. Maybe I should not have answered this question lol!

Sincerely, just upbringing and habit sometimes. I was born and raised in North Carolina and I have met lots of people who use those terms to refer to everyone. Cashiers at the grocery store, tellers at the bank, waitresses, a lot of men and women use those terms to everyone. It's just a way to show friendliness.

I don't think its love, I dont think its endearment, i dont think its any of those, I think its as simple as... for at least myself, looking at who I talk like that with... Being comfortable with someone. If someone is your "kind" of person, you'll probably feel comfortable using it. However, there are those people out there that call everyone they know by these names...then it's just habitual.
