Mars is the name given to the planet. It is the name of the Roman god of war. You don't put "the" in front of a name, do you? It is a matter of grammer, not astronomy.

Mars is the NAME of the PLANET. We don't say..."the Fred" do we? Notice that the same is true for all the other planets. Do you say the Mercury or the Jupiter?? No. You don't use the article "the" in conjuction with the proper name of the noun. It is an English question not a science question.

and Larry is only part right. If you are talking about "the Mars Probe", "the" is an article for "Probe" and "Mars" is an adj. to the "Probe."

And we say the Sun and the Moon because that is what they are and not their proper names. All the other planets have mulitple moons and they all have names. I don't know if our moon and sun have names. But if we were talking about a baby who didn't have a name we would say the baby or the boy or the girl.

The planets were named after roman gods, therefore you can not say the Mars, the Venus, the Mercury etc etc, the same as you can not say the Jesus,as for the planet Earth,it is not a name of a god but a word that means dirt or ground,so you can say the Earth and it is a proper way,as for the sun and moon, they are not specific names,it's only to discribe what they are

For the same reason that we don't say the New York, the Moscow or the Greenland. I usually say Earth without the definite article, and the reason I say the Sun and the Moon is because there are many suns and moons elsewhere.

Because "THE ONE AND ONLY" is supposed to be an "understood" !!

"The" is only used with "Mars" when referring to something contained within the planet's realm
i.e. --- The Mars Probe --- The Mars weather -- The Mars atmosphere --ect ect ect !!

The refers to personalization of Earth, and is only used with Earth for that very reason, because Earth is not just the name of the planet, it also has a higher meaning for a lot of people, yes yes, i know this is kinda deep

Articles are not used with proper nouns in English is why. We say, "We're going to Lake Minnetonka" or "We're going to the lake" - even though both sentences specify a particular lake.

We also say, "We're going to Ted's house" and/or "We're going to the house," *and* we say,"We're going to the White House," just to keep all you foreigners off guard.
