If so, how will us Americans feel to be second best? We haven't been second best since 1775 or something, lol.

Yeahboy, we had slave labor at one time (both as British colonies and as the United States). And let's think there's many second best countries in Europe and other parts of the world, even the countries bordering us and they do fine and have big tourism dollars and immigration; we'll live. It's not like we are a dwindling road to 3'rd world/abject poverty.

LMAO, ROTFL redheadd, that's great.
I know that China is probably in it's second stage (beginning) to be a world class country, we had a rough start too, but I think in another 50-100 years they will be on a good road. Yes, India has a really chance too.
I say it's China second stage because let's not forget in the BC era China had a great empire and dynasties that made it huge.

In fact China started losing more global influence temporarily in the 20th century when communism started to rule there. China used to be the place for renaissance explorers to go and bring spices and other luxuries back to Europe.

And India was once considered a great empire/monarchy; again another place for Rennaisance explorers to go for spices and luxuries and also when Britain invaded it in the 17th century and put it under their rule they got a lot of luxuries from there. And in the sixth grade I remember reading that India's size (land mass) is considered a super continent.

I live in China as an ex pat from the USA.
Yes they will for several reasons.
First, about 5 years ago, Warren Buffet said they will be #1 economically by 2050. A year or so ago, he revised that and said 2025. I personally think, 2020.
China has a labor pool of over 800 million, that is almost 3 times the population of the USA. They have a problem with unemployment and most importantly, underemployment. Thus that will help keep wages low for decades, along with the cost of living.
China has a extremely stable government that is business friendly, along with a very stable society.
China is NOT COMMUNIST, that is impossible under a capitalistic system. They are communist in name only, even the cold warriors warrior, Henry Kissinger says that.
China is slowly morphing into a democratic federal republic, much like the USA. This being done at their own pace, not the pace the west wants.
More non party members are holding higher posts in China, something that was unheard of a few years ago.

China has no history of imperialism.
Tibet is an exception, yet they have an historical tie to them.
The Taiwan issue has been going on for almost 60 years and yet they have normal trade, diplomacy, cultural, scientific and technology exchange, and tourism. Taiwan recently lost its bid in the UN to become a member, the UN said they had no legal right. China wants it back under the same concept as Hong Kong, one country, two governments. I suspect they will be reunited for economic reasons in the next few decades.
China is going through much needed modernization of their military because it can now afford too. They are not expanding their military. They reduced their military by 1 million a year ago.
I believe China has no interest in military adventures, based on its past history and that its a very wise country that knows very well that conflict and war rarely turn out as envisioned, especially being the aggressor.
China believes in planning and went from an economic has-been 20 years ago to world class by a series of economic reforms and one and five year public plans that even you can see on the web.

Use their search engine.
Yes, I firmly believe China will become #1 economically and could care less about becoming #1 militarily. Why? They have the bomb and they know, in this modern world, that a defensive military and the bomb is all they need to survive.
Peace
Jim

Not yet. There will be a short period during which the EU will be #1, but China will shoulder them aside.
The USA's reign as number one has been about sixty years. The EU will last about fifteen. Then it will be China.
And even if the capitalist "reforms" in China that have caused so much misery in their population spark, ironically, a new socialist revolution, that will only delay them a little while.
And since Americans have been spoon-fed a lot of nonsense about politics, where our right-wingers think they can be unique in history and maintain rightist rule under a democratic system, and our liberals think they can put off socialist reforms with a handful of social programs, we will STILL be whining about being the best as we sink down.
Our entire sense of national identity is based on being #1. Heck, we still can't admit that the Vietnamese kicked our butts! Haven't you heard those excuses like "The anti-war movement stabbed us in the back" and "We didn't really fight the best we could" and the like? Remind you of the Nazis talking about why Germany lost WW1?
When we aren't #1, we'll deny and deny and deny... and maybe some little man will try to pull a Hitler and try to grab it back. Watch out world, this time the megalomaniac has the Bomb!
Oh, and to Forrest, who said "no manned space program"? Don't you read the news??? China has sent THREE people into orbit, and if their announced plans are followed, they will be on the moon BEFORE Bush has us scheduled to go back!

The only way they will be number one is if Walmart lets them import food and toys that poison you to eat the food and cause brain damage in our children. Actually the fastest growing economy is going to be India soon as more men and women are being college educated in high tech industries that make profits without the slave labor that's used in the Red Armies factories. The Red Army has their own factories that make hundreds of different products that the Army uses political prisoners and girls from the country that are sold to the Army for laborers. The Red Army is self supporting which makes the rest of government powerless to control them. Nice thought Huh.

China is quite possible becoming the new no. 1 country in the world. If China's economy and military becomes similiar to that of the US on a population basis they would be the Super Duper Power. There 3 times as many people in China than the US. India is in a similar boat as China, India could become the 2nd most powerful country in the world which would push the US to the third slot. As long as America can keep its current standard of living moving into the future, I could care less if China or India garnered the title of number one.
