Fish are what we consider "cold-blooded". That's not really an accurate term to use, because their blood (and the rest of them) is the same temperature as their environment. But that's the answer to your question. Mammals need to eat food more often so we have enough energy to maintain our body temperatures. Fish, reptiles, amphibians don't have that to worry about, so they can eat much less and survive. As as temperature of the environment gets cooler, they move around less, so they need even less to eat. That's a good thing, too, since their ability to digest food also decreases.

Same way you could live without eating for a week. They are running off of fat reserves.

It's okay to skip a day or two on occasion (with goldfish, I've even seen a one day per week fast recommended), but a whole week seems a bit much if there wasn't a particular reason they could not be fed.

I have a friend who regularly ships goldfish cross country to other fish lovers. Typically, you "fast" them for a day or three so they don't soil the shipping bags and poison themselves with ammonia, and then you hire an overnight or two day delivery service, and they should get to the destination just fine after going four to seven days without food.

She had one group of goldfish get "lost in the mail" for two weeks, and they still arrived in good condition.

The fish's durability, and fat reserves probably depend on the animal's general health and quality of diet prior to the beginning of the fast.

If you think it is funny to strve your fish maybe you shouldnt have them. They need to eat everyday just like you do. Just because they are a fish doesnt mean they dont need to be cared for. Many people are so mislead about betta's they think you can dump them in a plant bowl and forget about them. In reality they should have heat they are from thiland were it is hot. They also need food everyday not a bunch but everyday. My 9 bettas are all in heated tanks and get fed 3 times a day. I have had Dominick my blue betta for 7 years and another one Xavier for almost 5.

They are very strong fish. They originally use to live in tiny tiny tiny ponds, where they will mate with other bettas when it rain and all the tiny ponds would become one, and then go back to their own private pond, after some of the water would evaporate. Also the food is scartter so survival depend on mosquito larvas and other insects, they can go for a while without eating.

Uh its like fasting to people. They don't really need much. I suggest just feed them everyday. Don't bother trying to like starve them so you can save money on fish food. And if you have algae or life plants, they just nibble on that.
