I suppport a team out of the top four but think that if any team other than Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea or Liverpool were to win the premiership it would be good for the game, bring about a refreshing change. I think it would be nice to see an underdog winning, not just in this sport but in any sport.

Of course. Surprise victories in any sport are part of the great attraction of watching sport in the first place. The more the same tiny group of clubs dominate the game, the duller and more predictable the game becomes. These days, its all about whose got the most cash, and that kills competition on the pitch.

If I just wanted to support a business, I'd follow Shell Oil or someone on the Stock Exchange. But I want to follow football...and without frequent upsets by underdogs the game is repetitive and boring.

Well, EPL is different to the likes of NBA and AFL, in NBA and AFL teams are always even'd out after a few seasons due to the drafting system. Which has its pros and cons.

EPL has a top 4 team, which are miles ahead of other clubs in terms of players, staff, finance... everything, which also has its pros and cons.

I live in Australia, and we play AFL here and a club over here can be great one season and absolutely crap the next. Their is no identity and character in the club. I can never choose a club to support because it is like getting to know someone everyday as a new person...

The character of a club like Manchester United is so strong... same with Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea slowly climbing that wall with international fanbase. This is actually more good for the game then having 20 seasons and 20 different winners. Clubs become more prestige, and each week the fixtures show more meaning. Man Utd vs Liverpool BIG MATCH. Man Utd vs Sunderland - underdog story. its always exciting, but if 20 teams were even.. every fixture will be the same - BORING.

Umm... good idea... sometimes a new champion can refresh the whole league and attract new people to see football. Just look behind when Denmark and Greece won European Cup.

But a football team cannot be built overnight. It is an organized sport where the real champions have to work hard over decades before they finally can reach the top. Current Man Utd was built by Ferguson over a decade. Wenger has been coaching Arsenal for many years. Liverpool is traditionally a powerhouse in England and Europe. Chelsea is a special case, but I don't think Abramovich's money can buy long-term success. Nobody can do it in football (did you see what happened in Real Madrid and Inter Milan with all their money few years behind?). Chelsea had good talents in locals like Joe Cole, John Terry, and Frank Lampard. They had coach with proven capability in Jose Mourinho. I am not sure whether they can retain their success in EPL these next few years, let alone win Champions League.

From time to time you can see underdogs win occassionally, and it is good because we can see competition there. But if they win over and over again, they won't be called underdogs anymore, but real champions.

I agree totally. The sport is half run on the factor of glory supporters and the teams at the top get world wide support and funding. It's difficult for the underdogs to win when the top teams have so much more money to spend on players. I personally think that there should be a restriction placed on each teams spending to force them all to have the same level of players. That way the game would be more interesting as it would be more based on the strategy of the managers buying and game tactics rather than on who has all the big name players.

It would be good, but it won't happen for a good few years. It might happen in the future with all these billionaires buying into clubs and pumping money into them to buy great players. But even then the world's greatest players will go to clubs with history and reputation rather than some up-and-coming club.

The best that can be hoped is that the big 4 get split up (Man City are a possibility after a great start to the season).

Why a club outside the top 4 won't win this season...

1. Not enough funds to build a team capable to challenge for titles.
2. The top 4 are light years way ahead of the rest.
3. Any strikers outside the top 4 better then the likes of: Van Persie, Adebayor, Bendtner, Torres, Voronin, Kuyt, Tevez, Rooney, Saha, Pizzaro, Drogba, Kalou???
4. Any midfielder that can control the game as well as the likes of: Owen Hargreaves, Francesc Fabregas, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard???
5. Any winger capable of storming down the wings like: Florent Malouda, Cristiano Ronaldo, Tomas Rosicky, Ryan Babel???
6. Defenders as astute as: Rio Ferdinand, Kolo Toure, Daniel Agger, John Terry???
7. Goalkeepers with a pair of safe hands like: Van Der Sar, Almunia, Pepe Reina, Cech???

until then it will be difficult to rob the title from the top 4.

,I see where your coming form but good for the game? that's just a fallacy like when they say wouldn't it be nice for a underdog to win the fa cup, so would you rather watch a game between two of the top four in a final or would you like to watch Man u against wigan or Brighton, the fact is the top four play the best football and are there on merit and are the cteams that neutral fans like to see when watching a game on tv.

also...

8. Substitute as strong as Shaun Wright Phillips, Schevchenko (!), Nani, Anderson, Torres???

but I would love if Man City win the league. Eriksson is really knowing the EPL (after many years in England), and also good at searching new talents.

Absolutely agree with you. Show the moneymen that money can't buy everything. But I don't really see it happening, however Man City are a possibility, but there again money would still be demonstrating its power.
